Does Anyone Use Twitter To Gain More Readers?

OK. So I have a confession to make. I do not know how to use Twitter. In fact, it scares me somewhat to even get started. It all just seems so much more technologically advanced that I am. Being the technophobe that I am, I really have not even really looked into it.
So this is where I need your input. Do you use Twitter to gain new readers? How is that working out for you?
On many of the blogs I read, I see that the author may have 150 RSS readers but 1,000 Followers. Is it better to have followers or readers? I am so confused.
If you use Twitter, drop me a comment and let me know how well it is working for you. Do you get more readers as a result of use Twitter?
I would appreciate any help you have provide.
